A Surprise Arrival for Max and Belynda
On 13th December 2011 I accompanied my wife, Belynda, for a routine pregnancy check up at John Hunter Hospital. At 31 weeks along and having had a trouble free pregnancy until this point, we never expected the visit would hold any surprises, though she had been feeling a little unwell lately. After several tests and a few hours of waiting for results we were told Belynda had pre-eclampsia with HELLP syndrome. These are potentially life threatening disorders which only occur during pregnancy, with only one real solution: we were told our baby had to be delivered, c-section, within 24 hours. Words can’t describe our shock in that moment!
Belynda was closely monitored overnight and the next morning, on the 14th December at 8:26am our little girl Isla Quinn Nichols, was brought into the world by the wonderful neonatal doctors at JHH. Belynda was discharged some days later, while Isla spent the next 5 weeks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The support provided to us and to baby Isla was fantastic, and though we always knew she was in capable hands.
Miracle Babies does a wonderful job of supporting families like our own. One special event that touched us, was the Christmas surprise with a visit from Santa! He left a photo of himself holding each baby, and a stocking filled with toys and baby wraps at the end of each crib. For all the parents who never dreamed this was how they’d spend their child’s first Christmas, it was a priceless moment that brightened the day.
Our heartfelt thanks go to Miracle Babies and the work they did for us & our most important treasure - our darling daughter. We will never forget the support and cheer they’ve given to us, and countless others, and we are thrilled in knowing that all money raised is going to such a deserving charity.
