The Observatory

Picture
Sponsored by Rhomberg Rail
Positioned in the heart of Sydney, close by The Rocks, The Observatory Hotel is the ideal base from which to explore Australia’s most vibrant city. This Orient-Express urban retreat is known for its tranquil, boutique atmosphere, yet offers easy access to Sydney Harbour Bridge and big city action.

The Observatory Hotel's deluxe rooms have the comfortable, cosy atmosphere of a 'home away from home'.  Elegantly appointed with mahogany custom-made furniture, each room features King or Twin beds and is decorated with the utmost attention to detail.

Rich tapestry curtains, set off by rope tasselled tiebacks, provide the perfect backdrop for the antique-style breakfast table and down-filled armchair, while Colonial-style sash windows open to circulate fresh air and provide charming views of Observatory Hill and historic Walsh Bay.

Room facilities include DVD player and broadband internet.

Rockpool

Rockpool’s food is a revelation. Totally unique. Part Perry and his career-long interest in Chinese flavours, part chef Phil Wood, who won Sydney’s coveted Josephine Pignolet Award when he was at Tetsuya’s.

Turning 21 is a monumental landmark and this dame has certainly aged magnificently.  While owner Neil Perry ventures forth on his many global food adventures, he can rest easy knowing young gun chef Phil Wood delivers on the home front. Waiters, runners and sommeliers slide, glide and pirouette in a near-flawless performance that would do the Australian Ballet proud.

In distinguishing itself as the fine-dining elder sibling of the Rockpool family, 21 last year, this most zestily grown-up-feeling of Sydney restaurants conjures a fantasy of luxe, often Asian textures in a big-city setting.

Chef Phil Wood has found his feet, and team Neil Perry, whether in its knowledge of the cellar or its general verve, has rarely looked better, both front and back of house.  The city doesn’t have many genuine dining institutions, but after 22 years at the forefront of Sydney gastronomy, Rockpool is certainly up there…
